Chinese Calligraphy & Painting

This workshop will introduce participants to aspects of Chinese calligraphy and brush and ink painting.  The day is suitable for new and existing calligraphers

Topics:-   Introduction - brief history, tools and materials
              Chinese Calligraphy - practising 3 styles of Chinese calligraphy and examining 

              the principles behind each
              Brush and Ink Painting - exploring the connection between Chinese calligraphy 
              and brush and ink painting. Practising Chinese landscape painting, studying 
              water and mountains

Tutor Information:-

Elaine Woo MacGregor studied Fine Art at the Glasgow School of Art leaving with a BA (Hons) degree.  She then acquired a studio working as a full time artist exhibiting throughout the UK and abroad.  Elaine has received recognition for her work via the Dewar Arts Award, the James Torrance Memorial Award, the Hope Scott Trust Award and the Cross Trust Fund

In 2001, via a Cross Trust fund travel and material bursary, Elaine spent a month sketching in Beijing, China, and Tokyo, Japan.  During 2008 she was Artist in Residence at the University of Guizhou, China and stated afterwards that “it helped to bring back some strong connections to my Chinese roots, providing me with a better understanding of the Chinese way of life and its ancient philosophy”

Elaine is also a passionate and popular art lecturer teaching at the Glasgow School of Art and the Centre of Lifelong Learning at Strathclyde University since 2008-9

2017 "Introducing Calligraphy" Workshops

We were pleased to be invited back to Cass Art, Glasgow to deliver Summer calligraphy workshops for store visitors who were new to the art form or wished to refresh past skills

Iain Howie, a Glasgow Scribes member, again delivered the 2 hour sessions on behalf of the group on the following dates:-

The sessions were held 10am-12 noon and 2pm-4pm with a good turnout of enthusiastic calligraphers attending them.  We hope that we inspired everyone to take up the enjoyable and diverse hobby and that we may also see a few visitors at our meetings

Thanks to all at Cass Art, Glasgow for their help and support and for their enthusiasm for the art of calligraphy.  A special thanks also goes to Fiona, store manager, who moved to Toronto, Canada at the end of the Summer - we wish her a happy and successful new life.  And of course - thanks to Iain for his time and effort in delivering the enjoyable sessions!

2016 "Calligraphy Basics" Workshops

In association with Cass Art, Glasgow, the Glasgow Scribes delivered some calligraphy workshops in the store's Art Space on the following dates:-

The Art Space

Places on the 10am - 12 noon or 2 - 4pm sessions were pre-booked following publicity produced by Cass Art and the Glasgow Scribes and via local newspapers and radio stations.  The workshops were delivered by one of our members, Iain Howie, who successfully enthused and inspired participants in a relaxing, learning environment during the session.  We're sure that participants will continue to enjoy their new found or past hobby and will help to promote an enjoyable and creative pasttime to others.
