Meet the Calligrapher: Clare Coia

For our latest MTC we caught up with one of our newest members to find out what drew her to calligraphy, what she has been working on recently and, more.


What made you start learning calligraphy?

Just loved seeing calligraphy on posters/ stationary and books and wanted to be able to do it myself.


What's your favourite calligraphy tool or material?

My manuscript boxed dip pen sets with all the different nib sizes.


Memorable calligraphy person you've met?

Elizabeth Beattie and Peter Lloyd who have both both taught me at Calligraphy classes.


What was your last piece of work?

I’ve not done much for a while apart from gift labels so here are two of my favourites.


What is your favourite script?

Italic


Advice for new calligraphers?

Give it a go. It’s the best hobby I’ve had where you can get absorbed in what you are doing and push everything else in your head to one side.


The best calligraphy book you've read/bought?

I found ‘The Calligraphers Bible’ by David Harris gave a great overview of different scripts and how to try them.


What hobbies/activities do you do other than calligraphy?

Crafting/ Reading / Body Combat classes (although not during lock down)


Last TV/Movie you watched?

Jack Reacher Never go Back.


If you could invite 3 calligraphers (past/present) to dinner, who would you invite?

Donald Jackson (think he would be really interesting to talk to. Gaynor Goffe/ Peter Halliday from looking at their inspiring work.
